  • May 22, 2017 Toyota Research Institute..said..it has teamed up with MIT Media lab and five other companies to explore blockchain..for the development of driverless cars. The project would enable businesses and consumers to securely share data on testing and driving as well as the sharing and usage of such cars to help set insurance rates..The database would use blockchain.. .."Hundreds of billions of miles of human driving data may be needed to develop safe and reliable autonomous vehicles..Blockchains and distributed ledgers may enable pooling data from vehicle owners, fleet managers, and manufacturers to shorten the time for reaching this goal." ..Toyota is also using blockchain to lower car insurance rates. By allowing a vehicle's sensors to collect driving data and store in a blockchain, car owners may be eligible for lower insurance costs by giving their insurance companies increased transparency to reduce fraud.(copy also at Reuters) and allow autonomous vehicles to be truly autonomous. This means that a car could refuel, recharge and park on its own – and pay for those services as well. Opportunity at the edge..Most entrepreneurs in the self-driving car space, said Gerryts, are focused on mobility. However, Oaken is focused on the layers and support systems that could underlie this operation. "these edges of the industry could use smart contracts running on a blockchain to connect everything. Plus, cars equipped with a repository of cryptocurrency could purchase services – say, a tune-up or an oil change – using an instantaneous and inexpensive payment rail."....But before autonomous cars, Oaken is looking to equip today's cars, those that could be manned by a human with the ability to purchase services using cryptocurrency.
